What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the essence of a plant, a gift from the earth, distilled and prepared for you to bring the power of nature into your home. Inside many plants—hidden in roots, seeds, flowers, bark—are concentrated, highly potent chemical compounds. These natural compounds are essential oils. Essential oils give a plant its scent, protect it from hazardous environmental conditions, and even assist it with pollination, among other important functions and benefits.
How are essential oils used?
There are 3 ways to use essential oils: aromatically, topically, and internally.
Aromatic use is the most well known as it involves our sense of smell. Our sense of smell is connected to the limbic system in our brains so taking a wiff of essential oil does much more that please the nose. Our limbic system deals with emotions and memory while regulating our autonomic/endocrine functions.
Topical use of oils is the most specific when dealing with skin irritation or local areas of pain. By simply applying oil to the skin, with or without the use of a carrier oil, you can effect the chemistry of the skin and underlying structure.
Internal use of essential oil is the method that will have the greatest systemic or overall effect on the body. Essential oil can be taken directly in the mouth, dropped into water or your favorite beverage, or added to a vege cap and taken like a vitamin.
